Practice Tips Vocal Warm-Ups Technique Suzy S. Structuring your vocal warm-ups and practice between lessons can make a huge impact on your success. Here, Bloomfield, NJ teacher  Zachary B.  shares some helpful tips In my experience, many students make progress during a lesson and often return to the next lesson with the new skills forgotten. Merely practicing songs, without specific structure usually leads to singing the song repeatedly. While this does familiarize you with the song, it does not help you improve from a technical standpoint, as it excludes warm-ups and technical work. So whats the solution? I structure the practice routine for each of my students, so they know what do. Effective practice consists of: 1. Warm-up 2. Vocal Technique 3. Song study 4. Cooldown A breakdown of the first two elements are elements are the point of focus in this blog, as they are usually neglected. The purpose of a warm-up is to prepare to the body and voice for the activity of singing. This is done through the release of unnecessary physical tension and awareness of healthy voice production. The warm up can be broken into two areas: I.Physical warm-ups II. Vocal warm-ups Physical Warm-Ups Physical warm-ups should consist of stretches, such as shoulder, neck and full body rolls and self massage of neck and facial muscles in particular. These are used to reduce unnecessary physical tension and produce a healthy body alignment for singing. Vocal Warm-Ups Vocal warm-ups should consist of lip trills, humming, and sighs. The purpose of vocal warm-ups is to get the voice ready for more dynamic activity and to reduce unnecessary laryngeal/pharyngeal tension. Lips trills focus on initiating tone and steady airflow. Humming also focuses on initiating tone with a focus on forward resonance, which is highly valued in contemporary singing. Sighing is a great way to elevate unwanted vocal tension. Tips for More Efficient Vocal Warm-Ups Warm up in descending patterns using the 5th  interval from the top of the tessitura (comfort range) to the bottom. (e.g. C to F, B â€" E etc.) Extremes in range should be avoided in the warm-up stage. Slide from the first note down to the fifth note to induce laryngeal relaxation. Do not target each note. Vocal Technique This part of practice consists of exercises aimed at voice building and correcting vocal faults. Exercises should reflect the needs of the students and be integrated with the repertoire being worked on in the lesson. Although these areas of practice (vocal technique song practice) are clearly defined, integration of exercises and repertoire is of great importance, and is more effective than working on each area individually. Therefore exercises should be integrated with the repertoire, by being in similar ranges, keys and working on similar vowel shapes. If you have 30 minutes each day to practice, aim to spend 10 to 15 minutes (or 25 minutes  in an hour practice session) of that time on vocal warm-ups exercises. Happy Practicing! Having a space just for sleeping and studying was a good way to see that there was a lot to do outside of my room. The dining options get similarly mixed reviews. Champions Choice, conveniently located right outside our gym, offers the healthiest options. Argos is open until late in the morning, and Andros is conveniently in the middle of campus. The food itself is pretty good, and there is something for everyone (even vegans). There are many opportunities to socialize with other students, but like anything else, it is what you make of it. You could theoretically go to class, go to your room, and have a perfectly fulfilling college career, but the dorm life makes it incredibly easy to make friends, create experiences you will remember, and enhance the time you spend at the university. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Ray: University of South Florida is pushing STEM majors. We have a strong Engineering major, but also a focus on the arts, international concentrations, and business. I majored in International Studies after taking several German classes, studying abroad, and finding my International Business courses overly generalized and irrelevant to what I found interesting in the world. The school did a great job with this field; the faculty and students are all very interested in the subject, and there are incredible opportunities for entering the international arena (job-wise) while you are at the university. We even have a National Competitive Intelligence Program. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Ray: Greek life at University of South Florida seems as equally influential as at the other universities I have visited. I personally did not participate, but I had no problem making friends, connecting with a variety of people, and enjoying the social aspect of my college career. As a freshman, all you need to do is walk around, ask someone to eat with you at the dining hall (there is always one nearby), or just strike up a conversation with someone while sitting and enjoying the scenery. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Ray: There are a slew of companies that regularly market on campus to students. In conjunction with the Career Center, we have an online job board for employers specifically interested in our student body. The Career Center will help you critique your resume, stage a mock interview, or simply coach you toward becoming more professional through one-on-one meetings or their many workshops. There is also an annual career fair for all majors, for Engineering majors, and also for part-time positions. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Ray: The school does an excellent job of providing a variety of areas to study in. For those who find the library too crowded, there is a very well equipped sky lounge in the Marshall Student Center. The dorms all offer common areas to gather in that make for a good way to get out of your room, without having to trek across campus. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Ray: Unfortunately, Tampa by nature is very spread out. The top locations for going out (Ybor City, SoHo, Channelside, Downtown) are all quite far (25 minutes by interstate) from campus. This also makes it incredibly difficult to go out/get around if you do not own a car. But if you do not have one, it is not hard to make a friend who does! VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Ray: There are over 40,000 students at University of South Florida, but many of them are commuters. For this reason, it can feel a bit hectic with all of the drivers. The class sizes vary tremendouslymy German courses had no more than 20 students per class, whereas many common courses will be taught in a lecture hall of 300+ people. I found the variance nice, as it helps you appreciate the perks and drawbacks of the different class sizes. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Ray: As far as a memorable experience, it is much easier to remember things we found embarrassing. I did not give my first presentation to a large class until senior year. Public Speaking only prepared me to speak in front of a group of 20 standing in front of a class of closer to 100, I basically froze. I know it always feels worse to the person on the spot, but I can now really respect people who can naturally speak in front of large groups. Check out Rays tutoring profile. A big dream or big vision for your career isn’t the sole domain of the Extraverted in this world. Sometimes Introverts tip the scale on limiting how they see their future. It can be tough in our Extroverted culture to compete with the louder center of everyone’s attention, which is also our cultural ideal. After years spent seeing what looks like the majority of the rewards going to others, dreams can tend to shrink, but the ambitions are still there. All of that is easy to understand as you go from child to adult. But now that you’re a fully contributing Introvert adult, it’s time for you to understand you can create your path to greatness. We know more about how to adapt our behavior to situations through education and skill building, just like we now know how to shape great leaders. It all starts with the dream or vision. For some people, creating a “vision” feels like nailing Jell-O on a wall: kind of hard to get hold of, feels kind of squishy and may be pointless. If there were ever a good argument for creating a big, bold vision of your future, it would have to be to think about founding our nation and the guys who did it. No one told them what to do. They didn’t drag out of bed in the morning and say, “I suppose I better get that Constitution written today.” They had a vision that drove them through some of the worst adversity to prevail. That vision has fueled millions of people over multiple centuries. With these role models in mind, can you now see that nothing great is accomplished without a vision? (Click here to tweet this thought.) Here are the reasons why you want a vision for your career: We all need something big to inspire and excite us every day for a long time. It gives a purpose to your career and to your work. When times are tough and they will be periodically you need to know that a light will shine on you at the end of the tunnel. So, Why Is It Difficult to Create Your Own Career Vision? Because you don’t do it. Like everything else we do, if you don’t exercise a muscle, it will be very hard to use when you try. This means you need to start using your vision and get it pumped up. Here are some things you can do to start building a muscle for your career vision: Start with some quiet, private time and let your imagination run free. (You remember your imagination, don’t you?) If you meditate, even better. While in your tranquil state, think forward in time and observe the impact you have had. Ask yourself questions like: What would you like to say you impacted or accomplished through your work? How would that feel? What would you like others to say about you at your retirement party? Think about what you would do if money were no object. Think about what it would look like if you could accomplish everything you imagine. Once you’ve started this process, revisit this exercise until you squeeze as much as you can from your own vision. There really are no restrictions and no “right” or “wrong” ways to construct your vision. Your vision shouldn’t sound or be something like a checklist of tasks, because that’s not a vision.
